What To Pack In Your Backpack When Travelling
Whether you’re getting ready for a trip to Europe or headed out on a city tour, this is an essential travel pack list for your backpack. I’ve been overseas enough just this year to have plenty of experience with packing. I’ve made mistakes and learned along the way. Here’s everything you need from the backpack to what all goes inside.
Table of Contents
The Backpack
First and foremost, my go-to backpack is REI’s Trail 30. There are plenty out there on the market with similar characteristics. What I particularly love about this backpack (besides the fact that it is my favorite color blue) is that it easily fits under the seat in front of me on a plane, even if it’s stuffed full of my belongings. It has a padded back and straps with an adjustable harness to buckle across your chest and waist for added support. There are two handy zipper pockets on the hip belt that I like to keep my phone in, especially if I’m hiking or riding my bike, but need it to be easily accessible. It also has an abundance of zipper sections and both sides have a water bottle pocket. This backpack comes with a compact waterproof bag, which I never thought I’d use…until a rainy day in Venice happened.

The Pack List for Your Backpack
Below are some of the things that go into my backpack for the plane when I’m traveling overseas. The following list can easily be modified if you are hiking, biking, or simply out exploring for the day, but this is a good place to start.

Most of these items were purchased from Amazon. The rest, like travel-sized items (toothpaste, hair bows, etc.) can easily be purchased at your nearest beauty or drugstore. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account with free 2-day shipping, you’re missing out! Sign up today for a 30-day free trial using my link here.

Technology
- Adapter Kit
- Headphones
- Phone Charger
- Portable iPhone Battery Pack
- GoPro Hero 7 or Camera & Accessories (I use Sony a6000 currently)
→tip: I use tiny binder clips to keep my cords organized and to prevent tangling in my bag
Entertainment
- Travel Diary/Journal (I like to collect these from places I visit)
- Pen
- iPad or book (visit this list for my top 10 favorite books)
Personal Care
- Lotion (My favorite is Nivea Hand Cream)
- Essential Oils ( doTERRA Essential Oil Key Chain Bag with Vials )
- Oil Blotting Tissues
- Hand Sanitizer
- Chapstick
- Deodorant
- Body Spray → Victoria Secret has the best travel size bottles
- Hairbrush (wetbrush for the win always!)
- Hairbows
- Q-tips
- Make-Up Bag → best to use a clear TSA approved one if flying
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste → sample travel size
→ Pinterest hack: I took an old gum pack, removed the wrapper, and now store q-tips, hair bows, and bobby pins for when I’m traveling.
→ Fun fact: The silver bag that I keep some of my personal care items in, was the bag given out on one of my Turkish Airlines flights that contained a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, chapstick, etc. Resourceful eh?
Identification
- Passport
- Wallet → this also serves as a passport cover and holds multiple cards and IDs
- International Drivers License → never know when you need to rent a car in a foreign country (read this post here about how to get an IDL)
Miscellaneous
- Sunglasses
- Flip Top Water Bottle→ saves you some $$ at the airport
- Neck Rest Pillow
- Medicines → Benadryl, Advil, Tums, etc.

My boyfriend has his REI pack and he LOVES it. I bring much of the same with me on trips, but I also add my teddy bear into the mix 😉

Haha I love it! Most people get the Osprey, but REI is such great quality and just as useful as Osprey!

Nice list. Very similar to my own packing list! I’d always also bring an umbrella though, if there’s any chance of rain. I discovered the hard way that no matter how good your raincoat is, it won’t keep you dry in monsoon season!

Sooo much truth to that! That happened on my last trip in Venice. Soaked from head to toe and had to buy an umbrella from a random person. Won’t make that mistake again! Good tip 😀
